Marrakech’s Desert, Minutes from the City
Not everyone can spend three days reaching the Sahara. The Agafay is Marrakech’s gift to those with less time but no less desire for the desert experience. Ancient volcanic rock, parched ochre earth, and a horizon punctuated by the snow-capped Atlas — it doesn’t look like a compromise. It looks like a dream.
The Experience
4:00 PM — Pickup from your Marrakech hotel. 35-minute drive through the foothills south of the city.
5:00 PM — Arrive at the desert camp as the light begins to turn golden. Mint tea and Moroccan pastries in a beautifully decorated Berber tent while you take in the Atlas Mountains panorama.
5:30 PM — Sunset camel trek. Mount your camel and walk into the rocky desert as the sun drops toward the mountains. The light at this hour is extraordinary — everything turns amber and rose. Return to camp as the sky darkens.
7:00 PM — The Berber dinner begins. Three courses served by candlelight in an open-air tent: harira soup, chicken tagine or lamb tagine, couscous with vegetables, fresh salads, and Moroccan bread. All served in traditional style on low tables with cushions.
8:30 PM — Gnawa music performance. The Gnawa are masters of an ancient African musical tradition — their hypnotic rhythms on sintir bass lute and iron castanets fill the desert night.
9:30 PM — Stargazing session. The Agafay has almost zero light pollution. With clear skies (most nights), the Milky Way is visible with the naked eye.
10:00 PM — Return to Marrakech, arriving by 10:30 PM.
