The City the Atlantic Shaped
Essaouira doesn’t look like the rest of Morocco — and that’s precisely the point. Built by French engineer Théodore Cornut in the 18th century on the orders of Sultan Mohammed ben Abdallah, the medina follows a European grid plan within walls that seem to hold the whole Atlantic at bay.
The Day
7:00 AM — Pickup from your Marrakech hotel. Drive west through argan forest, stopping at an all-women argan oil cooperative to see how Morocco’s liquid gold is made and taste fresh amlou.
9:30 AM — Arrive in Essaouira. Your guide introduces you to the Skala de la Ville — the great sea bastion, its cannons still pointing west over the waves. The view from the ramparts is extraordinary: the old port, the fishing fleet, the endless Atlantic.
10:30 AM — Walk through the medina (UNESCO World Heritage). Blue boats. White walls. Painted wooden doors. The covered marquetry workshops where craftsmen work thuya wood into intricate boxes and frames. The fish market where the morning catch is still being sorted.
12:30 PM — Lunch in a medina restaurant (not included, but recommended: grilled fish at a port café, overlooking the boats).
2:00 PM — Free time. Choose your own adventure: relax on the 3-km Atlantic beach (bring a windproof layer!), browse the gallery quarter for Essaouira’s thriving contemporary art scene, visit the Gnawa musician quarter where this ancient African musical tradition still lives, or shop for blue-painted wooden items and silverware.
5:00 PM — Return journey to Marrakech, arriving by 7:30 PM.
Why Essaouira?
It’s consistently rated one of the world’s most beautiful cities by travelers. It was the backdrop for Orson Welles’ Othello. Jimi Hendrix made it famous in the 1970s. Game of Thrones filmed here. And above all, it has a laid-back, creative soul that no other Moroccan city quite matches.
