An Hour from the Medina, a World Away
People are often surprised how quickly Marrakech yields to wild mountain scenery. By the time you’re winding up the switchbacks of the Ourika Valley — the river rushing far below, Berber terraces clinging above — the souks and mopeds feel like another planet.
The Day
8:00 AM — Hotel pickup. Drive south through the foothills (passing through several small Berber market villages) as the Atlas Mountains rise before you.
9:00 AM — Arrive in the Ourika Valley. Begin a gentle riverside walk through the valley floor — mulberry trees, wild mint, and the cold rushing Ourika River. Your guide introduces you to the farmers, the terraced fields, and the irrigation systems unchanged for centuries.
10:30 AM — Visit a Berber saffron cooperative — one of the world’s finest. Learn how the precious crocus is harvested by hand (each flower contains only three red stigmas, making saffron the world’s most expensive spice). Taste saffron tea and local honey.
11:30 AM — Mint tea with a Berber family in a traditional mountain home. Sit on woven cushions, drink sweet tea, and ask anything you like. This is not a performance — it’s a real invitation into someone’s home.
1:00 PM — Hike to the Setti Fatma waterfalls — seven cascades tumbling down a rocky gorge. The first waterfall is a 20-minute walk on a well-maintained path. The higher falls require scrambling but are worth it. Lunch at one of the valley-floor restaurants (not included).
3:30 PM — Return to Marrakech, arriving by 5:00 PM.
Good to Know
- Best visited November through May (summer can be very hot; July–August risks flash floods)
- Wear comfortable walking shoes
- Bring sunscreen and water
- Children and seniors easily manage the lower valley walks
