The Green Heart of the High Atlas
Just 60 km from Marrakech, the Ourika Valley is a completely different Morocco. The red city’s heat is replaced by cool mountain air and the sound of rushing water. Terraced villages cling to the valley walls. The river winds between willow trees and vegetable gardens. Women wash clothes at stone channels. It feels ancient, because it is.
What You’ll Experience
The Drive Up — the road south from Marrakech cuts through the olive groves and palmeries of the plains before climbing into the foothills. Roadside stalls sell mountain honey, wild herbs, and handwoven Berber carpets.
Setti Fatma Village — the valley’s main village and the starting point for the waterfall hike. Browse the weekly market (on Mondays, it’s one of the best in the Atlas).
The Waterfall Hike — a 30–45 minute walk along the river brings you to a stunning series of cascades. The final pool at the base of the main fall is perfect for swimming in summer. Wild Barbary macaques live in the rocks above — they’re bold and entertaining.
Berber Lunch — sit on a riverside terrace and share a slow, traditional lunch: harira soup, fresh salads, slow-cooked lamb tagine, mint tea, and fresh fruit. The setting is unforgettable.
Herb Garden Visit — stop at a traditional Berber herb and saffron garden, where local farmers explain the medicinal and culinary uses of Atlas Mountain plants.
