Africa’s Most Beautiful Waterfall
The first time you hear Ouzoud before you see it — a distant roar growing louder through the olive groves. Then the path opens and the full spectacle appears: three separate torrents of white water plummeting 110 meters into a deep jade gorge. It is, quite simply, one of the most beautiful natural sights in Africa.
The Day
7:00 AM — Pickup from your Marrakech hotel. Drive northeast through the Middle Atlas foothills — a scenic journey through Berber agricultural land.
9:30 AM — Arrive at Ouzoud village. Before descending to the falls, walk through the ancient olive grove — the trees here are hundreds of years old, and the millstones are still turning. Buy a bag of fresh-pressed olive oil from the local cooperative.
10:00 AM — Descend the zigzag path to the base of the falls. The spray hits you long before you reach the viewpoint. Watch Barbary macaques swinging through the trees — the falls area is one of their last strongholds. Your guide explains the ecology and geology of the gorge.
11:00 AM — Boat ride (optional, $5 extra): Small wooden boats take you right to the base of the falls, into the mist. One of the most exhilarating short experiences in Morocco.
12:00 PM — Lunch at one of the cliff-edge restaurants overlooking the gorge (not included but outstanding value — fresh fish, Moroccan salads).
1:30 PM — Free time to explore the upper viewpoints, swim in the emerald pools (April–October when water levels allow), or simply sit and watch the light play through the spray.
3:30 PM — Return journey to Marrakech. Arrive by 6:00 PM.
Practical Notes
- Wear comfortable walking shoes (some wet rocks near falls)
- Bring a change of clothes if you plan to swim
- Children absolutely love this trip — the monkeys alone make it worthwhile
- Best March through October; wet season (Nov–Jan) makes the falls most dramatic
