Morocco’s Most Spectacular Waterfall
The Ouzoud Falls are a pilgrimage. At 110 meters, they are the highest waterfalls in North Africa — three main cascades thundering into an emerald pool in a gorge dripping with olive trees, fig trees, and the chatter of wild Barbary macaques. The spray reaches you from 50 meters away. The rainbows are permanent.
This is the day trip that travelers consistently say was the highlight of their Morocco experience.
The Experience
The Cascade Viewpoints — a series of terraced paths wind down through the olive groves, offering different perspectives on the falls. The closer you get, the louder the thunder of water. The spray cools you from 30 meters away.
The Swimming Pool — at the base of the main fall, a natural pool of vivid green-blue water is perfect for swimming. The water is cool and clear, fed directly by the mountain-filtered falls.
Wild Barbary Monkeys — the gorge is home to a large population of wild Barbary macaques. They’re bold, photogenic, and occasionally cheeky. Children love them.
Boat Ride — small wooden rowboats take you through the base of the falls and under the spray. You’ll get wet. Worth it.
Terrace Lunch — sit above the falls on a shaded restaurant terrace and eat slowly: harira, kefta, fresh trout (farmed locally in the Oued El Abid river), and honey from the local argan bees.
The Olive Groves — the hills above the falls are ancient olive groves, some trees over 300 years old. Walking through them in early morning light is quietly wonderful.
