Overview
The 1 Day Tour from Marrakech to Ait Benhaddou & Ouarzazate is Morocco’s most popular day trip — a circular journey that crosses the High Atlas Mountains, visits the country’s most iconic UNESCO World Heritage site, and takes in the Atlas Film Studios before returning to Marrakech the same evening. In a single day you’ll see landscapes and architecture that most visitors associate with much longer Morocco itineraries.
The day begins before the Marrakech medina wakes. Heading south, the city gives way to palmeries and then to the dramatic foothills of the High Atlas, where the road begins its climb toward the Tizi n’Tichka pass at 2,260 metres. The pass is the highest paved mountain road in Morocco and the main overland route between Marrakech and the Saharan south. The views from the summit — Marrakech plain to the north, pre-Saharan valleys to the south — are among the finest in the country.
Ait Benhaddou, reached an hour after the pass, is the reason this route exists. This fortified ksar (village) rising from the dry Ounila riverbed has been continuously inhabited for over 2,000 years and is arguably the most photogenic single location in Morocco. Its towers and battlements of pisé (compressed earth) have been used as the filming location for Lawrence of Arabia, Gladiator, Game of Thrones, The Mummy, Babel, and dozens more. Your guide will walk you through the still-inhabited village, showing you the construction techniques and pointing out the exact locations used in famous productions.
Ouarzazate, 30 minutes further, is Morocco’s film city — a wide, tree-lined city of kasbahs and studios in the desert foothills. The Atlas Film Studios, the largest in Africa, offer a fascinating tour of standing film sets, prop warehouses, and production history. The Taourirt Kasbah, once the most powerful palace of the Glaoui dynasty, rounds out the afternoon before the mountain crossing back to Marrakech.
