Overview

The 2 Days Tour from Marrakech to Ourika Valley is the most accessible mountain experience from Marrakech — a journey of just 30 kilometres south of the city into the High Atlas that feels like entering a completely different world. The Ourika Valley is a deep river gorge of extraordinary fertility: walnut and cherry orchards, terraced vegetable gardens, and traditional Berber villages of pink-and-ochre mud-brick perched on the slopes above the rushing river. In summer it provides a natural escape from Marrakech’s heat; in spring the cherry blossoms and wildflowers cover the valley floor; in winter snow dusts the peaks above while the valley floor stays warm and green.

What makes this tour a two-day experience rather than a day trip is the overnight stay in a mountain guesthouse — a kasbah-style lodge inside the valley with views of the peaks and the sound of the river. This gives you the early morning in the valley before the day-trippers arrive from Marrakech: the light, the birdsong, the mountain air, and the unhurried pace of Berber village life at its most authentic.

The Ourika Valley has been inhabited by Berber communities for thousands of years. The villages — Aghmat, Tafza, Dar Caid Ouriki, Setti Fatma — each have their own character and history. A visit to a traditional home, a stop at a women’s argan cooperative, a glass of mint tea with a village elder — these encounters, arranged by your guide, provide a window into a way of life that is genuinely different from anything you will encounter in Marrakech’s medina, despite being only an hour’s drive away.

Day by Day Itinerary

Day 1: Marrakech to Ourika Valley

Depart Marrakech and drive south through the Haouz plain, passing through the small town of Tnine Ourika (famous for its Monday market) and beginning the ascent into the valley. The landscape changes rapidly — from flat agricultural plain to lush valley floor with the red-and-pink mud-brick villages of the Berber communities climbing the hillsides.

First stop: a guided walk through one of the valley villages. Your guide introduces the architecture of the traditional Berber home — the central courtyard, the flat roof used for drying herbs and grain, the carved cedarwood screens — and explains the agricultural cycle of walnut, apple, and cherry that shapes the village calendar. Brief visit to a women’s cooperative producing saffron or herbal products — this valley is one of the few places in Morocco where saffron grows at altitude.

Lunch at a terrace restaurant overlooking the valley, with views of the river and the peaks above. Traditional Berber dishes — tagine, couscous, harira — using local vegetables and mountain herbs.

After lunch, continue up the valley to Setti Fatma — the dramatic upper gorge where the river tumbles through a narrow canyon. Walk the gorge path to the lowest of the seven waterfalls — a 30–45 minute return walk through the canyon, crossing the river on stepping stones, with the sound of rushing water and the mountains close on all sides. Overnight in a mountain guesthouse inside the valley.

Day 2: Ourika Valley — Morning & Return

Early morning on the guesthouse terrace — the valley at dawn, before the day-trip buses arrive from Marrakech, is a completely different experience from the bustle of midday. Light breakfast. Optional second morning walk through a different section of the valley or a longer hike above the village terrace for views of the full valley and the high peaks.

Return to Marrakech at leisure — with stops at any market, viewpoint, or cooperative that caught your eye on Day 1 but you didn’t have time to linger.

Travel Tips

The Ourika Valley is at its most spectacular in spring (March–May) when the cherry and almond trees are in blossom and the river is high from snowmelt, and in autumn (September–November) when the orchards are in harvest. Summer weekends can be crowded with Marrakchi families escaping the city heat — weekday visits are significantly quieter. The waterfall hike involves crossing the river on stepping stones and some uneven rocky terrain — wear comfortable walking shoes and expect wet feet at the river crossings.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How does Ourika Valley compare to the Imlil and Toubkal area? A: Ourika is greener, more cultivated, and more accessible — a valley of villages and orchards rather than the high mountain terrain around Imlil. Ourika is better for village walks, cultural encounters, and gentle hiking; Imlil is better for serious trekking and approaching Jebel Toubkal. Both are excellent; the choice depends on your interest.

Q: Can this tour be combined with a day in Marrakech? A: Yes — many travellers do the Ourika Valley as days 2–3 of a Marrakech visit, after a first day in the medina. We can arrange the sequence to suit your overall Morocco itinerary.

Q: Is the waterfall hike suitable for children? A: Yes — children enjoy the river crossings and the canyon walk. The terrain is moderately demanding but manageable for children over 6 with good footwear. The views and the waterfalls are excellent rewards for the effort.
