Overview

The 3 Days Tour from Agadir to the Sahara via the Draa Valley opens up a corner of Morocco that feels genuinely remote and ancient — a southerly route that avoids the well-worn Marrakech–Merzouga highway and instead follows the great Draa River through a corridor of date palms, mud-brick kasbahs, and Saharan villages that have barely changed in centuries. For travellers arriving into Agadir, this is the most direct path into the soul of Morocco’s desert south.

The journey begins by crossing the Anti-Atlas mountains via the Tizi n’Tazaght pass, a dramatic and little-known route that rewards with vast panoramas over the Souss plain and the distant Saharan haze. The Anti-Atlas is a harsh and hauntingly beautiful range — older than the High Atlas, worn smooth by time, dotted with fortified granaries (agadirs) and pre-Saharan villages built from stone and mud. You pass through Tiznit, a walled silver-working town, and Tata, an oasis town at the northern edge of the Saharan zone.

The Draa Valley proper begins near Ouarzazate and stretches for 200 kilometres south to Zagora — the longest palm oasis in Morocco and one of the most extraordinary landscapes on earth. Along this valley road, ancient earthen ksour (fortified villages) rise from the ochre plain, date palms stretch to the horizon, and the Draa River — seasonal, shy, but still present in the subsoil — sustains a civilisation that has existed here for millennia.

Arriving at the Zagora dunes at sunset, you mount a camel for the classic Saharan experience: the slow rocking rhythm of the desert, the sky turning purple and orange above the dunes, and the gradual hush that falls as the Zagora Erg swallows sound. Your Berber camp awaits with tagine, tea, and a night sky of extraordinary clarity.

The return on Day 3 follows a different route, cutting west through the Anti-Atlas via Tafraout — Morocco’s most beautiful mountain town, famous for its pink granite boulders and painted rocks — before descending back to Agadir. This circular routing means you see twice the landscape in one journey.

Day by Day Itinerary

Day 1: Agadir to Tata via Anti-Atlas

Depart Agadir and head south and east through the Souss Valley. Cross the Anti-Atlas at the Tizi n’Tazaght pass, stopping at a panoramic viewpoint over the mountain range. Descend toward the pre-Saharan plain and arrive in Tiznit — a charming walled city famous throughout Morocco for its silver jewellery. Walk through the medina, visit the silversmith souk, and admire the well-preserved city walls. Continue east to Tata, a green oasis town surrounded by palms in the middle of a stony desert landscape. Dinner and overnight in a guesthouse in Tata.

Day 2: Tata to Zagora via Draa Valley

After breakfast, drive northeast through the rocky hammada (stone desert) plateau toward the Draa Valley. Stop at the ksar of Tamnougalt, one of the most atmospheric fortified villages in southern Morocco, where a local resident may show you the ancient courtyard architecture. Drive the full length of the Draa Valley palm oasis toward Zagora — stopping at roadside stands selling Medjool dates and at a Berber family home for mint tea. Arrive in Zagora in the late afternoon and head directly to the dunes. Sunset camel ride, desert camp dinner, and overnight under the stars.

Day 3: Zagora to Agadir via Tafraout

Rise for the desert sunrise, enjoy breakfast at camp, then begin the return journey west. The route takes a different path — through the Anti-Atlas via Tafraout, one of Morocco’s most spectacular small towns. Surrounded by dramatic pink granite boulders and almond orchards, Tafraout is a revelation. See the Painted Rocks (rochers peints) created by Belgian artist Jean Vérame in the 1980s. Continue the descent back to Agadir, arriving in the late afternoon.

Travel Tips

October to April is the ideal season for the Sahara portions of this tour — summer desert temperatures can be extreme. The Anti-Atlas roads are paved but remote; this is not an off-road tour, though the roads are occasionally narrow and winding. Tiznit’s weekly souk is Thursday — an exceptional market if your dates align.
