Overview

The 3 Days Tour from Casablanca to Tangier is the classic northern Morocco traverse — three days that take you through more visual and cultural contrast than most tours twice as long. You begin in Casablanca, Morocco’s modern commercial capital, a city of Art Deco architecture and the vast Hassan II Mosque jutting into the Atlantic. You end in Tangier, the port city at the northern tip of Africa where the Strait of Gibraltar is narrow enough that on a clear day you can see the lights of Spain. In between are Rabat, the calm and ordered political capital, and Chefchaouen, the blue-painted mountain town that has become one of the most photographed cities in the world.

Each of these cities has a completely distinct character, and part of what makes this route so satisfying is the way they contrast. Casablanca is metropolitan and fast; Rabat is bureaucratic and French-influenced; Chefchaouen is mountain-village slow, the air cooler, the streets narrow and steep and genuinely beautiful; Tangier is cosmopolitan in a different way from Casablanca — a city shaped by its position between two continents and by the legacies of its international period, when it was simultaneously claimed by six countries and governed by none.

The drive through the Rif Mountains between Rabat and Chefchaouen, and through the coastal hills between Chefchaouen and Tangier, is in itself a significant part of the experience — mountain Morocco is genuinely different in landscape and in atmosphere from the arid plains of the south.

Day by Day Itinerary

Day 1: Casablanca to Rabat to Chefchaouen

Depart Casablanca with a brief stop at the Hassan II Mosque — the exterior and, if time allows, the interior are worth thirty minutes before continuing north. Drive to Rabat (approximately one hour), where you will visit the Hassan Tower and the Mausoleum of Mohammed V, then walk through the Kasbah of the Udayas to its viewpoint over the Atlantic. After lunch in Rabat, continue north and east through the Gharb plains and into the Rif foothills, arriving in Chefchaouen in the early evening. Dinner and overnight in Chefchaouen.

Day 2: Chefchaouen

A full day in Chefchaouen is one of the great pleasures of Moroccan travel. The town climbs up the slopes of two mountains — Jebel Chaouen and Jebel Tisouka — and the medina sits in a natural bowl formed by these two peaks. The streets are painted in every shade of blue and white, the light in the morning is extraordinary, and the pace of life is noticeably slower than in the Atlantic cities. Morning is the best time for photography and for exploring the quieter upper lanes of the medina. The central square, Place Uta el-Hammam, is the social heart of the town — a good place for breakfast and for watching the town wake up. In the afternoon, the walk up to the Spanish mosque above the medina gives the best panoramic view of Chefchaouen and the surrounding mountains. Dinner and second night in Chefchaouen.

Day 3: Chefchaouen to Tangier

Depart Chefchaouen in the morning and drive northwest through the Rif Mountains toward the Mediterranean coast, then along the coast to Tangier. The drive takes approximately two and a half hours and passes through some of Morocco’s most dramatic mountain and coastal scenery. Arrive in Tangier in late morning and spend the afternoon exploring: the medina and its souk, the kasbah with its views over the Strait of Gibraltar, and Cap Spartel — the lighthouse at the northwestern tip of Africa, where the Atlantic meets the Mediterranean. Tangier is the end point of the tour.

Travel Tips

Chefchaouen is busiest in July and August when European tourists arrive in large numbers; the town is most enjoyable in spring (April–May) or autumn (September–October) when the weather is mild and the streets less crowded. The morning light in the blue medina is the most beautiful between 7am and 10am — if photography matters to you, plan to be out before breakfast. The Rif Mountains can be cool at night even in summer; bring a light jacket. Tangier’s medina is navigable and safe, but the port area and the Grand Socco can be busy at night; your guide will advise on the best areas to explore.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How crowded is Chefchaouen? A: Chefchaouen has become very well known internationally, and in high season (July–August) the most photographed streets can be genuinely busy. Spring and autumn visits are significantly quieter. The town is large enough that even in summer there are parts of the medina — particularly the upper neighbourhoods — where you can walk without crowds. Early morning is always the best time to be in the blue streets.

Q: Is Tangier safe to explore? A: Tangier has changed considerably in the past fifteen years and is now a safe and pleasant city for tourists. The medina and kasbah are the main areas of interest and are well-frequented and secure. The port area is busy but straightforward. Your guide will be with you throughout.

Q: Can this tour be extended to include Tetouan? A: Yes — Tetouan, the former capital of Spanish Morocco, lies 40 kilometres east of Chefchaouen and could be incorporated as an additional stop on day two or as a morning visit on day three before continuing to Tangier. It is one of the least-visited and most architecturally interesting cities in Morocco, with a medina that is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
