The journey begins with the dramatic crossing of the High Atlas via the Tizi n’Tichka pass — at 2,260 metres the highest paved mountain pass in Morocco, with views that stretch from the summit to the Marrakech plain on one side and the beginning of the pre-Saharan zone on the other. The descent toward Ouarzazate traverses a landscape of extraordinary beauty: rocky valleys in shades of ochre, rose, and terracotta, with fortified villages clinging to every ridge and the snow-dusted High Atlas peaks visible to the north.
Ait Benhaddou is the tour’s centrepiece — a UNESCO World Heritage ksar that is simultaneously a living village and a 2,000-year-old architectural marvel. Its towers and battlements rise directly from the riverbed, built entirely from pisé (compressed earth and straw), their organic forms merging with the desert landscape in a way that seems impossible for a human construction. Your guide will walk you through the village, explaining the construction techniques, the history of the Glaoui dynasty, and pointing out exactly which sections appear in which famous films.
Ouarzazate itself — the name means “without noise” in Amazigh — is a graceful, spacious city entirely unlike the crowded medinas of northern Morocco. Day by Day Itinerary
Day 1: Marrakech to Ouarzazate via Tizi n’Tichka & Ait Benhaddou
Depart Marrakech early morning, heading south through the palmeries and the foothills of the High Atlas. The road climbs steadily through a series of dramatic switchbacks to the Tizi n’Tichka summit — stop for photographs and the panoramic view before beginning the equally dramatic descent. Visit Ait Benhaddou — cross the dry riverbed on foot and spend 90 minutes exploring the ksar with your guide. Continue to Ouarzazate for lunch. Afternoon visit to the Atlas Film Studios — a 90-minute guided tour of the standing sets, prop warehouses, and film history museum. Overnight in Ouarzazate.
Day 2: Ouarzazate Region — Taourirt Kasbah & Optional Excursion
Morning visit to the Taourirt Kasbah in central Ouarzazate — one of the finest surviving examples of Glaoui-era southern Moroccan palace architecture, with elaborately decorated reception rooms, courtyard gardens, and sweeping views of the Ouarzazate valley. After lunch, choose your afternoon excursion: the Skoura palm oasis (30 minutes east) and the Amridil Kasbah, one of the most beautiful in Morocco; the Dades Gorge (1.5 hours east) with its dramatic rose-coloured canyon; or a relaxed afternoon exploring Ouarzazate’s art galleries and craft shops. Overnight in Ouarzazate.
Day 3: Ouarzazate to Marrakech via High Atlas
Depart Ouarzazate and retrace the mountain road north, this time stopping at different viewpoints and at the roadside silver cooperatives where Amazigh women sell jewellery and crafts. Cross the Tizi n’Tichka in the opposite direction and descend to the Marrakech plain. Arrive in Marrakech mid-afternoon with time for a final evening in the medina.
