Overview

The 4 Days Tour from Marrakech to Fes via the Sahara Desert is the route every traveller with enough time should take between Morocco’s two greatest cities — a sweeping arc through the south of the country that transforms what would be a five-hour motorway drive into a four-day adventure through the High Atlas, the Saharan desert, and the Middle Atlas forests. Rather than connecting Marrakech and Fes, this tour uses the journey between them as the destination.

The standard Marrakech–Fes route takes the direct road through the Middle Atlas plateau, arriving in about five hours. This four-day version instead drops south over the High Atlas, through the cinematic kasbah landscape of Ait Benhaddou and Ouarzazate, and then east across the Saharan zone to the Erg Chebbi dunes at Merzouga — the golden sand sea that represents Morocco’s most iconic desert image. From Merzouga the route turns north through the Ziz Valley palm oasis and the cedar forests of the Middle Atlas before arriving in Fes from the south — a completely different approach that delivers the ancient city as a revelation after days of open desert landscapes.

Ait Benhaddou is the first great moment of the journey — the UNESCO kasbah rising from the dry riverbed, its earthen towers catching the morning light in shades of rose and gold. Ouarzazate and its Atlas Film Studios follow. Then the long desert road east, past the Dades and Todra gorges (if time permits a detour), to Merzouga — where the first sight of the Erg Chebbi dunes, glowing amber in the late afternoon sun, provides one of the great visual moments of any Morocco journey.

The desert overnight — camel ride at sunset, Berber camp dinner, extraordinary night sky — is the emotional centrepiece. The following day’s drive north through the Ziz Valley, with its corridor of date palms stretching to the horizon, transitions perfectly into the cedar forests of Azrou where Barbary macaques swing between the branches. Arriving in Fes after this journey, the medieval medina feels like a natural culmination of everything you’ve experienced.

Day by Day Itinerary

Day 1: Marrakech to Ouarzazate via Ait Benhaddou

Depart Marrakech early. Cross the High Atlas via Tizi n’Tichka (2,260m) with a summit stop. Visit Ait Benhaddou — 90 minutes exploring the UNESCO ksar on foot with your guide. Continue to Ouarzazate for lunch. Afternoon: Atlas Film Studios guided tour and Taourirt Kasbah visit. Overnight in Ouarzazate.

Day 2: Ouarzazate to Merzouga via Todra Gorge

Depart Ouarzazate and drive east through the Skoura palm oasis and the Valley of the Roses. Detour north into Todra Gorge for a 30-minute walk through the 300-metre canyon walls — one of the most dramatic landscapes in Morocco. Continue east through the Tafilalet region to Merzouga. Arrive in the late afternoon. Camel ride at sunset into Erg Chebbi. Overnight in a luxury Berber desert camp — dinner, music, and the finest night sky in Morocco.

Day 3: Merzouga to Midelt via Ziz Valley

Morning sunrise from the dune crest. Breakfast at camp. Drive north through Rissani — the ancestral home of the Alaouite royal dynasty — and into the spectacular Ziz Gorge, where the road cuts through a narrow canyon before opening into the vast Ziz Valley palm oasis, 60 kilometres of unbroken date palms stretching northward. Continue to Midelt, the apple capital of Morocco, set on the plateau between the High and Middle Atlas ranges. Overnight in Midelt.

Day 4: Midelt to Fes via Cedar Forest

Drive north through the Middle Atlas. Stop at Azrou in the cedar forest — look for the Barbary macaques (Berber monkeys) that live in the trees along the roadside. Continue through Ifrane, Morocco’s alpine resort town with its Swiss-chalet architecture and famous stone lion sculpture. Arrive in Fes in the early afternoon. First walk in the medina at your leisure — you’ve earned it.

Travel Tips

This tour involves a long driving day on Day 2 (Ouarzazate to Merzouga via Todra Gorge — approximately 6 hours including stops). An early 8am departure is recommended. Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How does this differ from the direct 4-day Marrakech to Fes tour? A: The direct route takes the motorway north and arrives in about 5 hours — it’s efficient. This tour takes the scenic southern loop via the Sahara, adding three full days of extraordinary landscapes and a desert overnight. The arrival city (Fes) is the same; the journey is completely different.

Q: Can this tour be done in reverse — Fes to Marrakech? A: Yes — we offer this exact routing in reverse. Many travellers combine it with our Tangier to Fes arrival to do a complete north-to-south loop.

Q: Is the desert camp comfortable? A: We use quality Berber camps with proper beds and bedding in traditional tents, shared or private toilet facilities, and a full dinner and breakfast service. The experience is rustic and authentic without being uncomfortable.
