Into the Roof of Morocco
An hour south of Marrakech, the road begins to climb. The plains give way to gorges. The gorges give way to a landscape of terraced barley fields, walnut trees, and stone villages that seem to have grown from the rock itself.
Imlil is a small valley town at 1,740 meters — the base camp for Jbel Toubkal (4,167m), Africa’s highest peak outside of Kilimanjaro. Most visitors come to trek Toubkal. On a day trip, you come to walk the valley, meet the people, and understand what Moroccan mountain life actually looks like.
What You’ll Experience
The Tizi n’Tichka or Tizi Mzik Road — the drive south from Marrakech passes through increasingly dramatic scenery: the Ourika Valley, the Moulay Brahim gorge, and the high mountain village of Asni before turning up into the Imlil Valley.
The Valley Walk — with your Berber guide, you’ll walk ancient mule paths connecting the valley’s villages: Imlil itself, the higher hamlet of Aroumd (1,900m), and the trail above the apple orchards. In spring, the slopes bloom with wildflowers. In winter, snow covers the upper ridges.
Toubkal Viewpoint — from the trail, the snow-capped massif of Jbel Toubkal is visible on clear days. Even without attempting the summit, the proximity to this mountain is impressive and moving.
Village Life — the Imlil Valley is one of the few places in Morocco where genuine Berber mountain culture is still practiced. Families still farm terraced plots, muleteers still carry supplies to high villages, and the weekly souks still happen by donkey.
Lunch with a Local Family — the highlight of many visitors’ day. A warm, simple meal in a Berber home: fresh-baked bread, amlou (argan butter with honey and almonds), slow tagine, and mint tea. Conversation through your guide, and the extraordinary hospitality that defines Moroccan culture.
